My name is Gwen. I am new to this site and new to gardening. I live in the State of MS and I am enjoying this site. I wanted to see if you could give me some ideas because I am dumbfounded here. The area I want to plant gets full sun. I am interested in hostas, daylily, shrubs (not sure on which kind to get), ornamental grass (the same as the shrubs). If you could be of any assistance, I would greatly appreciate it. I have two small children so it has to be low maintenance and I am looking for color and contrast.
Thanks,
Gwen

Welcome, Gwen. I can't advise on plants for your area except to say hostas do not like full sun. Perhaps if you have a shady side to your house you could put some in pots? I find they do well like that. Put some copper tape round the pots to prevent the slugs climbing up as they love hostas.

There are a few hostas that would work in full sun in northern Mississippi, but most of the State is too hot in summer for good results in full sun. Practically all kinds of daylilies will be happy there, though in the southern portion of the state, the Evergreen kinds may be more satisfying. There are more kinds of shrubs and ornamental grasses that work there than can be comfortably listed on any forum. You might want to walk about the neighborhood, take pictures of the ones you like--with the owner's permission, of course--and post them on a question, so we can identify them, and tell you about some of their features and foibles. You might also check with the local branch of the Mississippi State Cooperative Extension--they probably have useful publications and advice for you.
