my mature camellia leaves are covered in a black film - any ideas as to what caused it and how to treat it please?

Its called sooty mould - which is initially caused by greenfly type creatures which give off sticky secretions - sounds yukky - and the black mould coats the leaves. Apparently an insecticide needs to be used to kill the beasts and the leaves can be cleaned off with a cloth and mild soapy solution in water. It does work as a friend suffered from it - well her camelia did! You can google sooty mould for more info.
