Bay tree

Ely, United Kingdom

I have a bay tree that was bought froma 'Woman & Home' offer about 35 years ago, I Kept it as 'ball' for many years but it then suddenly decided to 'go for it' after I forgot to prune it one year. It is now about 30ft high, would it hurt if prune off the lower branches which go right to the ground at the moment, I would like to grow some shade lovers under it.

Hi Lizzie. Shouldn't hurt it at all. But just remember that if ever you want plants off it, the easiest way is by layering. And if there is no growth near the soil to peg in then you can't layer. Cuttings are difficult and seed nigh on impossible.

I agree - you are only 'raising the crown' which our tree surgeon advised us to do with several of our trees. They have been fine! Go for it!
