I want to grow a ceanothus in a pot which is around 1m high and 50cm diameter.
It is at front of house so get lots of sun but equally some rain and frost (although protected from wind).
I have seen Ceanothus grown as single trunk tree with leaf/flower area pruned to a neat shape and rather fancy this style - which variety should I use?
I also would explore option of a climbing ceanothus in teh alternative.

you could if you can take the bottem out of the pot so it looks like its growing in a pot but is infact growing in the ground and give it some support if its near awall .

I don't know what part of the UK you're in - if the balmy west or somewhere sheltered in the south, it might be worth a try, but Ceanothus can keel over in a bad winter even in the ground, so don't make great container subjects, where they're even more vulnerable to cold.
