Confused.....Monty Don says he puts all his weeds in the compost bin, I have always thrown them in my green waste dustbin as I don't want them to germinate. Am I ok to put all the weeds in my compost? What does everyone else do?
Thankyou

Thank you Bulbaholic. My problem is I don't seem to catch the bittercress before it flowers, so I may be safer putting in the recycling bin.

once in flower I put bittercress in the recycle bin too.
Dandelion leaves go in but I remove the root. [unless the rabbits get them] My bins dont get hot enough either to kill the seed.

Hi there,
I compost every thing, but, I do make sure that bind weed, couch grass and ivy have a good bake in the sun and are pretty much dead before they go on.
I tend to leave them for a week in a pop up bin, then add them.
Happy gardening.

Just 'some' of our weeds go in the compost bin. If the weeds are in seed or have tough roots then they go for recycling. If I can catch weeds like bittercress and annual willow herb before flowering then they are OK to compost. Once in flower they can produce seed that is not killed in my cold and lazy compost bin. Fiberous roots are OK but I try to avaoid dandelion roots. Couch and ground elder are definite no-no's.
