liatris spitica likes reliably moist soil but liable to rot in wet winter soil, I think ther answer to this contradiction is to plant it in good freedraining soil but mix compost into the planting hole to hold moisture, I have ( in places) heavy soil so I put quite a lot of grit and sand into the bottom of the planting hole for drainage, just leave the dead topgrowth on over winter and cut it back in spring fabulous mixed with rudbeckia
