I have acquired 3 Acacia Retinodes which are young and about a foot tall. Where is the best place to plant them and how tall will they grow and will they grow very wide. I have a 80 foot garden with a patio then a lawn then a flower bed. Will they need special soil ?

you definatly want them out of direct sunlight or to much direct sunlight and in a shelterd place . apart from this therequit hardy in that respect ie cold weather etc . im sorry im know good at latin names but most acers grow to about 12-15 feet and grow quit wide to . there are some low ground covering acers and trees ofcourse . im sure someone like bamboo who is more in the know will tell you the rest .

Oops, Np! Pauline got Acacias, not Acers.
Pauline, unless you are in an exceptionally frost-free area in the UK, you will not want to plant them in the ground at all. They are only hardy to -3.9ยบ C. They could be an indoor/outdoor plant, as long as they got plenty of sun. If you want to risk planting them in the ground, put them on the south side of a stone wall, which will help moderate the frost.

7 metres high by 6 metres wide, or so the books state, so you are going need a very large container! I would have thought three in a garden your size would be a little bit much.

Um NP I'm not Bamboo - lol :-) Mind you growing them in containers will also contain the growth but they will still get rather large.

Yes, I thought that some creative pruning would definitely be necessary, not to mention big tubs--thank goodness for hand trucks and dollies! : )
