We have recently (in April) tried to pollard two 15 ft eucaliptus nicholii by cutting about 7 ft from the main stem. There were no branches below the cut and both have started to sprout, one from the base of the trunk (at ground level) and the other about 18 inches from the ground. We expected them to sprout from around the place they were cut - can this now be achieved and how?

they may or may not sprout from just below the cuts, but will often choose to sprout from the roots first. you can wait and see if any more new growth breaks from the trunks, or cut down to where new growth is occurring.
