cone? found on beach

can anyone identify this plant which my son found washed up on a beach on the south devon coast. thanks

It's a pine cone of some sort, Docbob is most likely right. If you put it somewhere warm to dry out it will open up in due course. It's tightly closed because it's been in water.

hi, i've googled the two suggestions but the images don't resemble the cone. it's larger and heavier than any i've seen before and is very tightly closed still. maybe if it opens i'll be wiser.

Don't hold your breath. If it's been in the sea it'll take a long time to dry out. Maybe some of the heaviness is because it's soaked

It will never do anything now as it hasn't matured enough to develop further.
