I think i asked this last year with out the photo's so might help somebody to answer me, my clematis were cut back late feb early march cannot remember cut back to about twelve inches they are two years old looking good at the top but looking like they are dying at bottom leaves

They are in the ground s/east facing in sun from mid morning to mid afternoon under pebbles

As you cut them back in February, I assume they're in the viticella/jackmanii group, in other words, later flowering ones - try cutting them back to 2 buds from the ground next year, which should be 6 to 8 inches. If the tops are healthy I'd leave them alone.

They are flowering well now, i dont know which group they belong to but thanks any way
