Should clematis be routinely sprayed with fungicide like roses? If so, how often should they be sprayed? Is it because of mildew risk? Should it be used preventatively? Is Systhane/Myclobutanil the correct one to use? Does it cause any toxicity/stress to the plant? Advice appreciated.

I bought a young clematis recently from Crocus. I got the info from their plant label. It reads "Spray foliage once per month with Fungus Clear Ultra, and one per month with Roseclear 3". To me this seems to indicate preventativeness, like with rose treatment. This is why I'd wondered.

Hi Jonathan we've never sprayed any of our clematis.

Well I am inclined to agree with you Moongrower, seeing as I have never before heard of routine Clematis spraying. They are generally healthy plants, unless like Louise says, under stress. Only curatively therefore, if should need be.

Yup, that would be my view too - how are you doing?

I'm doing OK thank you Moon grower. My garden is looking a little better than average for this time of year, the 'gap' between spring bulbs ending and the summer bedding building up (always a problem for me). But I am working my way towards a fine display of colour to bedazzle me all summer long. My key is blending bedding and perennials into each other. Wheels are always on the go. The 'Bracknell In Bloom' judging ladies will be here again in just a month. I arrange it daily so like a proverbial 'bower bird' arranging its nest for a mate! I hope you are blooming beautifully likewise in your cooler norther clime. Are you and Mr Moongrower going to do another Perth show?

We 'did' Stirling, Edinburgh, Perth and Aberdeen shows as well as our own show in Nairn - which as of next year will be a full Scottish Rock Garden Show! We are off down to Edinburgh on Wednesday to be on the stand at Gardening Scotland for 3 days Friday - Sunday. I 'may', just 'may' have a professional photographer lined up who can take a few photos for publicity purposes. He took my avatar photo.

Good luck to you and Mr Moonbulb with your Edinburgh show. Would be nice to see some photos of your stand. Presumably you will be quite a main contributor to your Nairn show.

Follow-up question for Louise1 - you mention regular soakings for Clematis. Assuming no rain, how often would you suggest the regular watering should be done. I give each of my clematis a couple of gallons each once a week. Would you regard this as being regular and sufficient?

Hi Jonathan well if the photographer doesn't play ball himself will take some photos. We will obviously put everything we can on the bench but I know that other SRGC growers will probably put more on.

I've not known clems to need fungicide spraying but others might.
The only reason i've had clems get mildew is when i've not kept their roots moist enough but if you keep the hose on them in dry periods it usually sorts them out.
They're very thirsty plants and a lot of people don't know this, they don't give them the regular soakings that the need and they wilt or get mildew .... both due to dry roots.
