Osteospernums getting leggy

United Kingdom

My Osteospernums are getting very leggy this autumn, should I cut them back to stop them blowing over. I live in Jersey and they are completely hardy here.

Wandsford, I live on the Yorkshire coast and, once established, they are completely hardy HERE, never mind the beautiful (and mild) island of Jersey.

I would cut them back just to stop them looking unsightly. I hack my small patch every year and it always bounces back.

Yes I agree with John, you can cut them quite hard, and they'll shoot up the stems that are left.

Dear Wandsford. Yes you can cut them back and they will come back , BUT how about ripping them out and planting new varieties next year. The recent breeding work on Osteo has seen many new varieties now available. These newer varieties are heat tolerant and therfore will flower over a longer period into the summer. Varieties such as Cape Daisy Zanzibar and Side Show are ones to look for .These varieties are available in quite a few colours although mainly white and purple but Zanzibar has a good Pink Bicolour and Side show a beautiful Copper Apricot . In addition seed now available although the quality and performance is not as good as the vegetaitivly propagated types.
