I have a rather neglected Broom? Brush plant I would like to save but tidy it up where do I start?

If the broom has got rather woody and has not got a lot of green on it they can be difficult to salvage. As Primroseka has explained it is always best to give the broom a good trim once the flowers have faded and the new growth starts to form.
