Why are my fellow gardeners so accepting of the fact that FISHMEAL and HOOF & HORN which were readily available just a few years ago are no longer available?

Like Bamboo, i have never used them. My basic fertiliser is bonemeal which does everything that I need.

Hi Tedmoult, I use Blood, fish and bone all the time, and it's available in most garden centres (sometimes Loose to buy by the kilo, cheapest way) and any general store, like Wilkinson's, The Range, etc. I also use chicken manure pellets, which are also a good, rich food for flowers and veg. Good luck, Annie

Hi Ted, I remember as a child my Uncle feeding his chicken's and pigs on fish-meal. (did give the meat a bit of a distinct flavour though. Perhaps an animal feed supplier might be able to supply.

Ted's question begs the further question of wether we should be using fishmeal at all. Originally fishmeal was made from offal and fish-heads etc. Now a lot of fish is caught specifically for the manufacture of fishmeal. These are small species of fish that are not wanted for human consumption but are the staple food of many seabirds. One example would be sandeels which are trawled up off the Scottish coasts for fishmeal whilst their main natural predator, the puffin, is in decline.

Plus Ted's question is specifically about fishmeal, not blood, fish and bone - many people used to buy their own fishmeal and mix it with other things to make a fertiliser of their own recipe. Fish blood and bone is a proprietary mix, and its about 45 to 50% sand.

In my case, I never used those things anyway, so wouldn't even have noticed, I'm afraid.
