I agree we had this problem a few years ago and nothing worked but the stump grinder!

Supposedly putting saltpeter in holes in the stump will make it soft enough to dig up easily in a few months, but my experience with it has not been up to the manufacturer's hype. I've been blaming the low humidity in my desert climate, but I've been hearing the same thing from many other GoYers. I wonder where the "suburban legend" got started--it even shows up in old gardening books!

Buy SBK and use that - drill holes into the stump about quarter to half inch deep, depending on the size of stump, then fill the holes with neat SBK without spilling it anywhere else, cover with something and leave. It'll kill off the stump completely, and then you'll have to wait for nature to do its stuff to break it down.

Thank you all for taking the time to answer my question. The grinder is not possible as i could not get it in to my garden. Guess i will have to try SBK and then let nature do the rest.

The only way to remove stumps is to dig them out, or if you have enough room for access you can hire a stump grinder to grind them down.
If you just chop the trees down leaving the stumps, drill holes around the top and apply a specific chemical 'Stump killer' and cover the stump (within 48 hours ideally). They will die and not send up suckers but that's all, and the stumps may take many years to rot away.
When I have trees cut down the tree surgeon puts a chain on his chain saw to get the stumps almost level with the ground and then applies the stump killer.
