any perfect time to trim or just whenever? this thing has put some dangerous weight on an arbor (my fault) it is the most gorgeous vine i have ever seen!

You should trim it back after it has flowered. My book is a bit vague as to how far back to prune it,I'm afraid, but I don't think you can do much harm by taking the more vigorous shoots back to healthy buds to fit the framework it's on.
I wish I could grow this one!
