what can i do to try to save a dying gold barberry? would the approach be the same for other plants? Thanks

It depends on what is wrong with it, most common problems are from over/under-watering. I recently transplanted one and had to cut back most of it. It still looks bad but they seem to bounce back okay. I see a lot of gold barberries this time of year that get scorched and the best thing to do for that is to trim off any fried branches and make sure it has enough water.
