a small hole has appeared in my border approx 2" round with a depth of possibly 6" as no soil seems to be pushed up from below or and no signs of anything scratching this is becoming a mystery as i have filled it in once only for it to appear again a week later, any clues gardeners

I had a hole like this in the soil near the compost about 2 months ago, but no earth round it at all, I put a stick down it and it seemed to stop at about 5-6" I filled it up and have not seen any more. Sorry I havent a clue what made it? Though I did wonder if it was a ground Bee who gave up?

It could be water - heavy rain or watering causing erosion. It concentrates in places and leaves holes if there is sufficient water pressure and volume.

A snake is also a possibility. I never stick my fingers into the several holes that appear in my garden. Mice are much more likely though. Smaller holes can be made by bees or slow worms.

Could be a mouse, or even a rat.
