This is probably for Sandra or Hywel - when you take cactus cuttings do you let them dry/callous before planting them? Thanks.

Thanks so much for the information, it's much appreciated. I will bevel it in the morning. It probably will take a while as although it is quite warm here at the moment it's pretty humid.

That does slow the drying process, though it speeds up the growth of callous a little. Two tips: dry it in bright shade, and turn the cut pieces every couple of days to keep the growing point straight.

Then plant the cuttings in a very sandy gritty compost and keep it dry until roots have formed. I used to dust the cut surface with flowers of sulphur but I don't know where you could get if from these days.

In the States it is sold as "wettable sulfur dust", as a fungicide and miticide.

I should think you can get it at equine supplies places, Steragram - it's used to make a soothing cream for horses apparently.

Thanks for the tips, Tugbrethil. I'll follow them - I bevelled it this morning.

Thank you Wagger - i didn't know that!

I thank you also! Not sure how soothing it would be, though--it turns into dilute sulfuric acid when it gets wet! Maybe once the ringworm is dead....

Yes, definitely. Here in the desert, it usually takes just a few days, but it may take longer in the UK. It also helps to bevel the edges of the cut end, so that the cut doesn't become concave, which can interfere with root formation.
