Can a Black Sambuca be kept to a shrub size of about 5ft? Would it be ok to prune it now.
Thank you

I prune mine back pretty hard every year and it grows to about 4 feet in one season. I hack bits off at all times through the growing season and it doesn't seem to mind. If you cut it back now you will lose the display of berries but otherwise it should be ok. Try taking cuttings from the bits you prune off as they seem to take quite easily.

I've got one that I want to keep to about the same size as you do, PDB. I planted mine about 2 years ago and pruned out the largest 2 branches the other day, cutting them off near the base.
Coincidentally, I took a load of cuttings from the prunings..... :-)

Beattie when you took your cuttings where gave you put the pots. Inside or out and have you placed a plastic bag over them. I am successful at growing from seed but not so much from cuttings.

I've just taken some cuttings, too, from some prunings. I put them in sandy compost and put them in a cold frame, and three out of five seem to have taken, so I'll leave them where they are for the time being. Annie (Cumbria)

Pdb, the way you describe, with the pot on a light but not sunny windowsill and a polybag on the top, is the way I usually try to root cuttings, but this time I just popped them in a pot and put it in the cold frame in a corner I shaded with an empty compost bag folded over it. I only took them a couple of days ago so it's too early to say if they're going to root or not.

How do I say thanks?
