Ok thank you thats brilliant, ill just buy one then and let grow naturally. Would you have any other ideas of a plant i could grow as a hedge that is useful?

Hazel, though it tends to spread. Hawthorn is very valuable for wildlife.
Plants that are grown as a hedge have to be trimmed regularly to stop them growing into the trees they would become otherwise. This cuts off a lot of the flowering/ fruiting parts so they're not as productive.

If you have a large garden, then sweet chestnut's okay, but in a smaller one, it casts very deep and heavy shade, so needs an area to itself really.

beech trees make good interesting hedges thow you would haVE TO TRAIN IT AND KEEOP IT IN CHECK. CHERRIES GROW ON LAST YEARS GROWTH SO AS A HEDGE YOUD NEVER GET FRUIT OF THAT EITHER .sorry i tapped caps lock x .

How about red currants? They fruit on the old wood so you could clip them without losing the goodies.

Thank you for all your comments and advice! I do live redcurrents, that could be a nice idea for another area in my garden.
I have been given some other ideas too and decided to grow a willow hedge, im very excited! But the only problem is that i will have to wait until winter to plant it apparently :(

LOL Nosey - so what you thinking, if I don't mention the approach of the dark season, it won't happen? I wish, but its always best to be prepared I find... and anyway, September October is a really busy time in the garden. Faeriewishes is obviously looking forward to it so he/she can plant redcurrants, ready for a delicious crop next year, hopefully. But I hate all that dark...

Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) does not mix well with other plants. I'm also not sure you'd actually get any nuts if you tried to keep it as a hedge.
