I planted this cornus kousa about 2 months ago. It has been well watered and fed. The old leaves are going brown and crinkling at the edges. It has got new leaves but these are slightly reddish too. Is it best just left alone now to get established in its own time or is it lacking in something? Also could somebody tell me why in a clump of penstemon, roughly 4 feet by 4 feet only one is flowering although all the leaves look healthy enough?

I have one that is 2 years old and it has had a little bit of windburn this year, which, I suspect is what might have happened to yours. Just keep doing what you're doing and I'm sure it will be ok. This year's leaves will not get any better if it is windburn, however.

And wind is an increasing problem here in London, at least 3 out of 7 days a week are quite windy in summer when they never used to be. I suspect its time someone compiled a list of wind resistant plants, because its only going to get worse, being a symptom of climate change.

Thank you. We did have very strong winds just after the cornus was planted; they went on for several days so wind burn seems likely. It is in a fairly sheltered spot but the winds were exceptional.

Thank you again.

And penstemons tend to flower later in summer - be patient, I'm sure they'll start soon and still be going in October, provided we don't get another ridiculously early start to winter this year.

Thanks for all the advice. This is a very helpful website for me -- not just for the answers to my queries but for all the information contained in other answers and queries so thanks again.
