I have a mulberry tree that was seriously damaged in the heavy snow this winter, a large branch split off causing considerable damage into the main trunk.I thought the whole tree had died but it is regrowing in parts with a lot of dead.I know it shouldnt be pruned until late autumn but by then it will be difficult to spot what is live and what is dead. Will it harm the tree if I take out the dead wood now?

Be sure not to leave a dead stub, and try to smooth any cuts to speed healing. We paint the cuts with copper oleate, here in the desert, to prevent disease, but that may not be necessary in the UK.

No it won't harm the tree, take care not to damage the growing branches, cut back any dead wood very carefully.
