I have rose Golden Showers and clematis Gipsy Queen, both happy on a north wall.

Whatever you do don't grow ivy - it will take over and you will never get rid of it!

Honeysuckle seems to do well in my very shady bit of the garden+there is an evergreen one, which is a bonus.
