Flowering quince (Chaenomeles) is a possibility. A photo of the plant, the fruit and one of the fruits cut in half would all help to identify.

The most common plant like this in old gardens is Quince. If it is it will make a tall bush with attractive red or pink flowers in spring and then followed by yellow-orange fruits.

Sounds like a lemon tree that was once trained to a wall.
