Advice on making blackcurrant jam please (this isn't really a question at all!!). Had planned to put a jar of homemade blackcurrant jam in the annual village competition. However, I need advice as to how to do this - with ONE blackcurrant. Yes - on my whole bush - I have ONE blackcurrant. Granted it's a very nice one, with not a blemish on it! Ok, it was only planted last year - so hopefully it will produce more next year!!!! I think I'll take a photo of it and have it framed!

If you get lucky next year, I can send you a recipe!

I have thought very carefully about this problem. The only solution I can think of is to cut the blackcurrant in half and put it in a ramekin dish with half a teaspoonful of water. Cook it in the microwave. Add a quarter of a teaspoonful of sugar and stir until it is all dissolved. Return to the microwave and boil until it reaches setting point. Let it cool, wipe your finger round the ramekin to remove any jam, and wash the dish. You can either suck your finger or wipe the jam onto a crumb of bread. Leave the village show until next year as you suggested.

Thank you for that advice - you've obviously given it a great deal of thought - maybe you've had the same harvest as me in the past?!?

I specialise in tiny harvests, lol.

That's like the first time I grew tomatoes. How do you divide one cherry tomato into a family of four?

Rather more easily than doing it with one blackcurrant though. I guess they all wanted their share?

We all had just a little bit of tomato, and a lot of laughter! : D

I hoped that's what you did. :)))

My OH suggested making a very weak cordial with it . . . . .

Make him drink it - that should cure him

i wonder what one blackcurrant and one tomato would make together?
steragram i may need your considerable brain in order to help me do something with my blueberries ~ I am not expecting many next year ~ hopefully more than one though!!
This is a very entertaining question/blog ~ thank you.

Glad you found it in the end Sticki - obviously you would have the tomato for first course and the blackcurrant for afters - and then send out for a pizza!

Let us know how big your blueberry crop is next year. It will be bigger than mine - I ordered a bush from Parkers this Spring and it is now looking healthy, nice and bushy and all of five inches high. Not quite like the pic in the catalogue!

yes thanks steragram, sorry it took so long!!
tomato amuse bouche?? [is that how you spell it??]
double pizza i think!!

this year i had a small pot full of blueberries but the bush was new [from the GC] and had already got the berries on, i understand you should have two bushes to help the fertilisation and thats why i fear not so many berries next year!!

Bother, that means I'll have to get another - I already bought three more plants I hadn't meant to,when I popped out yesterday for some more compost.

They said one bush would produce some berries but it would most likely be better with more than one.

17 Aug, 2011

Oh well, needn't worry about that until next year anyway.

very true steragram; could you also look up a recipe to do something with ten blackberries please? that maybe the extent of the crop!!

19 Aug, 2011

All you need to do is cook them in 2 tablespons of water, strain overnight through a handkerchief suspended over a ramekin dish and add what... a desertspoon of sugar? Dissolve and boil to setting point. Not sure what you will use for a jam kettle - time to improvise. I'm sticking to crumble with mine!

Thank you steragram - maybe an individual portion here!

20 Aug, 2011

Well we did have the crumble today - a lot less trouble than jam!

21 Aug, 2011

no pudding for me today :-(
but we did go out and had lunch at a GC so i cant complain ~ salad with smoked salmon, prawns and smoked mackeral, nice!

poor you!

22 Aug, 2011

oh, i have just picked all ~ yes all ~ that are ripe ~ blackberries ~ all 12 ~ any suggestions?????
