Agapanthus - really long leaves
By Chrispook

My neighbour gave ma a nice Agapanthus last year. It was young so has never flowered. It is in a pot, so I brought it into the house before the frosts came, and overwintered it on a windowsill. It is still inside but hope I can put it out soon. It has developed very long leggy leaves that now trail on the ground. The leaves are still a healthy green colour, but I think they are much longer than they should be. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks Sid. Problem is I don't have a greenhouse. We get severe frost here in Hungary, much colder than UK. Often -15C at night in winter and sometimes -20-25C. Bringing it indoors was my only option really.
I'll keep an eye on the root development. It is in a terracotta pot. Do I need to feed it with any special food?

HI Chrispook - sorry, I completely forgot you're in Hungary! The only feeding mine get, is when I'm doing my baskets and tubs of bedding and I've got some spare in the watering can! I should probably feed them more, but I'm not big on feeding as a rule. So long as yours looks nice and green and healthy, I think you're on the right track. Mine took a couple of years of growing before they started flowering.

Agapanthus like to be congested to flower best so don't pot it on until it's absolutely fighting to get out of the pot

Hi Chrispook - They can in fact withstand temperatures down to a light frost. (Tho I wouldn't put yours out now, as it might have become too 'soft'). Do you have a coldframe or greenhouse? If so, I think it would be happier out there in the future. I think you just need to grow yours on for a couple of years before they will flower. They do produce alot of root (mine bust out of their earlier plastic pot!!) so mind they have enough room to develop. Hope this helps!
