plants suitable for clay soil in Portugal

Portugal
I live 50 kilometrs north of Lisbon. Just moved into a house and the soil is clay. Can you advise the best plants/trees.
The climate is not as extreme as the Algarve.

I would suggest Phoenix and Trachycarpus palms and agaves, a few Cypresses for structure, bananas, cannas, olives, Bourgonvillea for colour, also Ipomea (morning glory) is a great climber with lots of flowers, or even a Grape Vine. Roses and lavender for a more English feel.
There are so many plants which would work there but not tolerate the frostiness of the UK climate
