My tomatoes (outdoor) have not done very well. I have lots of green ones but only one so far has turned red. My neighbour who grows his in a greenhouse says he has had a bad year with his too. I was thinking of putting some clear plastic over them to help them ripen. Would this be a good idea or not?

Be patient, they will turn. Keep them watered and fed tho!

If you do put plastic over them to raise the temperature, be sure to use stakes and string to keep a 6 inch air space around the plants. Also be ready to open the ends and roll up the skirts if the sun ever comes out! Some gardeners in New England use floating row cover--much like a thin garden fleece--to warm up their tropical veggies in early spring and fall.

Thank you for the replies. My old Dad used to wrap each green tomato in some newspaper and put them in a drawer. They always turned red eventually.

You can also add a banana skin to the drawer, that will help them ripen. You don't even need to wrap them.

Thank you Moongrower. I'll try that.

I have had more than 4lbs of toms. Many of them are now red and they taste delicious.

Hi Casso innumerable folk are having problems with their tomatoes this year. I doubt that plastic is going to help we need more sunlight to ripen them or everyone will be making green tomato chutney!
