Especially good for most root crops, and members of the squash family--squash, melons, cucumbers, etc..

I'm told this is ideal for carrots, and the reason my carrots always fail is that it isn't sandy soil.

Agree Hank they need a lean sandy soil or they don't produce a decent tap root.

If you have a heavier, clay or silt soil, Hank, you can often get away with the shorter kinds of carrots, such as 'Royal Chantenay', 'Little Finger', or 'Tonda di Parigi'. High organic matter, especially peat or manure, seems to mess up all kinds of carrots.

Thanks Tug, I'll try those next. Incidentally I'll be passing your "place" on my way to San Diego very soon.

I'll wave as you go by! : D
If you get a chance to stop, be sure to check out the Phoenix Zoo, and the Desert Botanical Gardens. If you do stop, remember the heat, and carry a cool water bottle in an insulator. Delonix1 keeps complaining about the heat in San Diego, but it is still cooler than here--though possibly warmer than Cheshire!
