Can I grow peppers without a green house?

I want to grow some peppers but I do not have a green house. Can I grow them in the open, how bid will they grow and at what time of the year is the best time to buy the plants.
Thanks for your help.
I have been busy with other things but I hope to be growing and getting my back garden in some kind of order soon. I will post some photos for the work in progress

You dont say where you are, but a friend in telford grew some last year in a very sunny hot spot in her back garden. She grew them on the kitchen windowsill until they were too big then potted them up in grow bag compost and put them outside. they suffered with greenfly in july but i think she sprayed them with soapy water. She got 5/6 pepers per plant. its worth giving it a go and hope for a warm summer.
