My friend who lives near Scarborough has a climbing rose at the side of her conservatory and when it starts growing the leaves are shiny and it flowers well but by early July she has to cut it back down as the leaves are covered in black spots and we wonder what could be causing that.

Hello halliwell, it sounds like Blackspot which is a fungal problem some seasons are worse than others, in severe cases of blackspot the leaves will turn yellow with lots of mottled blackspots and the rose will virtually defolliate, it is a good idea to collect up fallen foliage and put in your recycling bin, you can spray with a fungicide.

This sounds like rose blackspot which is fungal and causes dark spotting on rose leaves and stems. Untreated leaves turn yellow and drop off. You need to remove afftected leaves and fallen debri from under the rose as spores overwinter on the fallen leaves and re-infect the plant in spring when new foliage appears. Plants are weakened by recurrent attacks so you need to spray with a good rose black spot treatment. I am currently using 'Rose Clear 4'which treats green/blackfly, blackspot, mildew and rust.
Next spring you need to be alert to any signs (and there will be) and treat at once and continue per container instructions throughout the growing season.
