I bought this small equisetum plant recently with a view to plant it in the border by my pond. On reading the label, Im not sure if Im brave enough to plant it, theres almost a health warning on it. The warning roughly translated reads: This plant is very vigourous and liable to spread. Do not plant into open border unless you do not mind it taking up alot of space it is liable to run! It sounds a bit of a thug. Am I building up problems for myself by planting it?

It is simply a variety of Mares Tail. Equisetum Arvense is the really invasive variety, it would be wise to use a container.

Personally I wouldn't even plant in a container, unless you are very vigilant it will seed and it is a nightmare to get rid of - I know we've got it!

It certainly tends to run wild in northern Arizona, especially in wet soil. I would put it in a container in a pond, or in a pot with water retentive soil. Be sure to cut the spore cones off as soon as you see them or it might escape that way.
