I am a useless gardener!!! Have a cabbage palm growing in front garden and it seemed as if it survived the harsh winter. Now all the leaves seem to be dying off but there are lots and lots of shoots growing from half way down the trunk. Do I take these off or leave them. I thought they might be the reason for the leaves dying??? Please advise. Thanks

The cold winter killed the top of your cabbage palm (Cordyline) - and thousands of others all over the country. It's regrowing from part way up the trunk - that's what the shoots are. The top won't come back so you'll need to cut it off above the new shoots. If you do this with a slanting cut, rain will run off and not collect and cause rotting on the top of the trunk. You can let all of the new shoots grow into new branches on your Cordyline, or if there are too many you can take some off. I don't think you can get these to grow independently as they don't have any roots.
