When is best and how do you take cuttings from a pink/carnation?

Answers

I took some successfully from a bouquet of flowers last year. I just took off some non flowering tips, put them in water on the kitchen windowsill and they all rooted. I have one just about to flower in the garden and so has my next door neighbour.

Dear Camomile,
I apologise for the time delay in sending you my thanks, but I am grateful nevertheless! Can you answer the following for me please 'when is the best time to take cuttings from a plant in a border and which bits do you take?

You could probably get away with taking non flowering tips now. Try to make them as long as you can and strip away any leaves that might dangle into the water and rot. I left mine in the water for ages after they had rooted. Pot them but keep them sheltered from frost during the winter.
