Which scale do I cut above?

Is it the first from the bottom or from the top? For example is it the one that the top flower has come from? And how do I make the cut (diagonal or straight)?

If we are talking about a Phalaenopsis, then it's the one right near the base. Just take your scissors and snip! It doesn't seem to matter if it's a straight cut or a diagonal...
I do cut mine, because the old stem looks so ugly, and my orchids seem to thrive on this treatment...I have a white one which has been in flower constantly for three years.

i didnt cut mine but the scale nearest the bottom/roots/leaves started sprouting annd grew a new flower spike from there. the next spike grew from the 3rd 'scale'. so not sure really.
