Hello, I'm rather confused as to when is the best time to plant tulip bulbs for the following Spring.
In the past, I've just followed the instructions but given that our seasons are changing/merging, I don't know whether to plant them earlier or later these days. There seem to be less frost patches in the autumn and the ground seems perennially damp!
Any advice gratefully received!
Many thanks

It's very confusing, I have just purchased some tulip bulbs which say plant'August' onwards. or as soon after purchase?//////
The ground is pretty wet at the moment after all the rain of the last night we had torrential down pours and strong winds.
I would say don't keep them too long or they may start to sprout.

I get them back into the ground as soon as possible. If buying I would plant them now.

I planted lots this morning. They were "Sent out late August / September ready for planting ", so I did.

I bought some this week and it says plant as soon as purchased. However, Tulips loathe sitting in water and don't root until later in the year when the weather turns colder. The ideal planting time is from October until December (provided the soil is still workable).
I will not plant mine till around Nov 1st as I find less of them rot away and more come up if I do. All the other spring bulbs I plant in September/October.

I've always understood you should wait until November to avoid the danger of the disease tulip fire. Planting earlier doesn't seem to confer any advantage re flowering time.

Can I jump in and ask a further question please ladies and gents!
I think my soil is a bit to moist to plant Tulips - however - I have bought some cheap ones to try out.
I was going to put them in a plastic plant pot in multi purpose compost and sink the pot in the ground. Would this work? I want them too look like they are growing in the border rather than stand the pot in the border.

Thank you, everyone, for your help.
I'm concerned that if I plant them too early, the bulbs will just rot- especially with the weather we are having. Think I'll hedge my bets til late October.
All the best x

Scottish, a plastic pot will retain moisture more so than being in the ground. I would suggest that you plant your bulbs in the plastic pot and keep it in an unheated greenhouse over winter. Keep the compost just moist until growth starts in the spring and then plunge the pot in the garden.
I am not convinced of the 'tulip fire disease' argument. I have always planted early and never had a problem, neither have any of my friends and I believe that bulbs are better in the ground than on a shelf.

I too dont know about TFD affecting my bulbs either Bulbaholic? But I do find most new Tulip bulbs dont come up if planted before November.

Thanks Bulba...I don't have a greenhouse, so I may just take my chances in the ground. I have some grit left over - I will mix it in with the soil and hope for the best.
Drc the labels say plant from 'August onwards' but I will leave them for a while yet.
Thank you x

Previous question
I'm intending to plant mine as usual - in late October/November. Who knows what the weather will do?
