I have moved into a house with a lovely garden and it hs a large Yukka in it apparently the flowers are lilac or mauve but it hasn't flowered this year should I take the old stems of flowers away ?

Yuccas produce white flowers - your plant may actually be Cordyline australis, which produces brownish colour flowers. Google to make sure which one it is, or post a pic on here. Remove spent flower stems from the base, where they join the plant.
