More likely irregular watering and the drought early in the season. You can get around this by steaming your potatoes rather than boiling them.

I don't often peel spuds anymore.

I thought I read recently on another site that the answer was to store the potatoes for a while, in the dark, to let their water content settle or something - is that complete rubbish, guys?

New ones taste best straight from ground to pan though don't they. Some varieties do disintegrate more easily than others. If you want to eat them boiled without mashing look for ones labelled waxy or creamy next year.
You might find baking the ones you have gives you a better result - worth a try.

Main crop potatoes will store well but you can lift a root from the ground and cook within minutes, we do so once our early potatoes are finished and prior to wanting to harvest them all. Everything I have read states that it is lack of water. Not a problem in our neck of the woods this year!

Lord, you have to be so careful about things you read on websites - as you know, veggies are not my forte, and I read on this other site that the problem with them mushing up like this is excess water content from too much water, and if you stored them for a while the problem would go away. I must say it sounded like c...blers at the time...

It is Bamboo, as is a lot of the info on veggies... Pimpernel we never peel our potatoes either, I just give them a good scrub.

Sound advice Mg. Rain in the mids has been all or nothing this year unfortunately. Had some very scabby efforts from my earlies, small too,but a scrub then a scrape here & there,a few minute par boil still produced tasty,(if different) oven wedges.

Bulba and I also grow very waxy varieties of potatoes which helps - it is the floury ones that are able to turn to mush in seconds if not watched closely. A great main crop potato is Robinta a red skinned tattie with a great flavour.

Question for MG & Bulba.....I was given freshly dug Epicure potatoes when in Arran and thought at the time that they were the best spuds I have ever tasted. They are not easy to obtain here, is that because they are better grown where it is a bit cooler ? Have you Tried them?

Hi I 'think' we have grown Epicure - but we grow a lot of different potato varieties! All potatoes taste wonderful reshly dug. So far as I know all the varieties are available and can be grown throughout the UK.
