Sulking shrub
Hi All :-)
My Azara Microphyllia varigata (sp?!) appears to be sulking about something. A lot of its leaves have started curling and almost wilting which has thrown me a bit as its never done this before and I haven't changed anything.
Its been like it for a couple of weeks, hasn't got any better but hasn't got any worse. I have given it extra water in case it was dry but not sure sure if anything else might cheer it up a bit?
Thank you

Could you add a photo to your question - as they say a picture paints a thousand words.

How long have you had the plant?

Thanks for replies so far, am now panicking about nasty bugs! It's 3 years old, roughly 2 metres high and is in the ground. There are also a hydrangea, a mock orange, and a magnolia in the same area but well spaced out and they are all doing really well

A photo really would be a huge help...

I'm sorry moon grower, it's such a pain but I'm using my iPhone and any pictures I try and post are so blurry they would be useless. We need a GOY iPhone app!

No - you need a digital camera, lol!

Lol!! I work in finance so I'm not allowed to add any hardware or software to my laptop. Very security conscious and boring!

You should already have software on your laptop to deal with images.

If you hold your iphone still enough - a square will appear and focus on the area you are trying to capture. Hit the button once this square appears to have focused on the area.
If you tap the screen when in camera mode - a slide button appears at the bottom of the screen to allow you too zoom.
You then have to save your pictures on your laptop - window picture gallery is the default programme. This will convert to .jpg which will allow you to upload on the site.
You can't upload direct from your phone to GOY.
Don't mean to teach my granny how to suck eggs :)

I've had a go with my works blackberry, so hopefully its clearer than the iphone. Poor Azara has drooped a bit more since the original post :-(

Hmm, this doesn't look good - that wilting shown in the first photo in the shape of a shepherd's crook indicates something fungal, probably at the roots - Wilts, anthracnose, etc. Check the stems at the base for signs of disease or damage, but if it continues, it's probably safest to remove the whole plant and dispose of it either by burning or binning, not recycling or composting. You might want to leave that soil fallow for a while afterwards, or just grow soft stemmed perennial stuff for a year or so.

Hi Bamboo, thanks for looking. I was afraid you might say something like that. There is no eveidence of damage or any nasties anywhere, just the wilting leaves.
Is there anything I can give it to give it a boost? I have it my mind that you aren't supposed to feed plants past stepember for some reason but I'm willing to give anything a go!

No -your memory serves you well, shouldn't be fed past end of June, in fact, rather than September. You can wait and see what happens next year if you like, but if it is a fungal problem, whatever the cause is may remain in the soil the plant is growing in, so do not attempt to grow another one in the same spot.

I wonder if something's eating its roots? The dreaded vine weevil crosses my mind. You could water it with vine weevil killer solution (by Provado, I think). Another possibility, is it in a pot? If so it may need repotting to give it some fresh compost to work on. Better done in spring really though, I think.
