A small Prunus, or an Amelanchier, or a Rowan. Crab-apples are lovely too - look at Malus floribunda as an example. Maybe even a rose bush if you haven't a lot of room?

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Amelanchier Obelisk or Ballerina would be smaller - Prunus amanogowa only gets 6 feet wide and 25 feet tall, called the Flagpole Cherry. Your sunflower, by the way, is only an annual, so will die very shortly as the weather cools and winter approaches.

Try Malus 'Admiration' or Sorbus 'Cashmieriana' both are small trees. Our Sorbus C is only 2 metres in height after nearly 20 years.

Depends how small a tree - if you select carefully, Acers are a good choice. Another idea is to have a tree or shrub that would flower on the anniversary of your loss.

Except nothing is guaranteed to flower on a specific day !

Thank you so much for every one of your msgs... I would love a tree with a nice flower every year, but as one lady said, it's not garenteed to grow on a certain day.. Thanks for every one of ya kind msgs :)

Lisa...Planting something is a nice way to remember someone we love. It does not have to be a tree or a single thing. What month did you lose your Dad ?

We can help you out..( With out the Latin plant names thrown in )...

Give us another go, we can help you remember and enjoy daft things he did all year round that are special.

Can you send a picture of the place you have in mind ?

Lisa good luck with finding a small tree that will help you remember your father. Pimpernel, we've all given suggestions to Lisa already and Latin plant names are needed if she is going to look up on the internet!

Yes MG I realise that, in fact I think Bamboo has made two good choices. As a non gardener I would go for her "flagpole Cherry." as I can imagine it.

Would I be able to imagine an Amelanchier Obelisk ? No, but I can see a June Berry Tree or Rowan.

I repeat to look things up on the internet you need the latin names. Common names vary not just from country to country but from county to county. Trees in particular it is important to use latin for.

Hi my dad passed away last August :( the tree am wanting in memory of him is going into a medium sized pot at the bottom of my garden... I've also got a momory plaque on the fence for him where the tree is going... I also have one for my dog that we lost sadly in Feb this year :(:( thanks again :)

So sorry to hear you lost not only your father but your dog. Although the Japanese acers (maples) tend to stay small they need to be in semi-shade, i.e. no sun from around 11am - 2pm and also in a wind free area. What is the diameter and depth of your pot as that will be a factor in which tree you can grow. The Malus (crab apple) I mentioned will stay small enough for a pot but the Sorbus (rowan) wont. I am not aware of any trees that flower in August... but another GoYer might know of one.

Aww Lisa. Can you send a photo of the spot where you want to remember ?

What month was your dad born? When did he meet your Mum? And when were you born? all big bits of your Dads life.

We can give you flowers in August. There may be a Climbing flower we could grow up that fence.

This is a good time to be planting a garden Starting with Bulbs ready for spring and a new year.

Do you have some evergreens in the Memory Garden, so that there is all year interest ?

How well would a Hibiscus do in a pot ?

It is not a tree, but it would have the general effect and a good possibility of flower in August.
