I HAVE A NEWZELAND FLAX IN THE FRONT GARDEN WOULD IT BE OK FOR ME TO TRIM IT BACK AND HOW FAR CAN I TRIM IT BACK . PLEASE COULD ANYONE HELP .THANK YOU

I dug one up on Sunday, take a look at my latest blog. I have potted them up and will give them away.
I also trimed one of the others, as Andrea said trim the lower leaves that are touching the floor and take out the dead ones.

...and wear gloves and cover yourself up! The leaves have very sharp edges!

A couple of years ago, I got right underneath mine with an old bread knife and sawed off lots of bits....it loved it and is now just as big again!!

What I would do is take off all of the dead leaves from the bottom of the plant, you can trim healthy leaves also, but make sure it is from the bottom of the plant. Unfortunately this will not look very good and the large plant will continue to expand. If you have the strength and energy you can dig it up, split it like any other garden perennial and replant one of the sections where it came from, making sure you add some fresh compost and a bit of bonemeal. The other sections can be potted up and planted elsewhere or given to a friend.
