In RSA we were advised, when pruning rose bushes, to apply a dab of nail varnish to the exposed cut on the bush to stop bugs eating into the plant and killing it. Does this practice apply in the UK ?

what a waste of nail varnish. No I have never heard of that. the rose soon dries and seals itself with little problem.

We do that here in the States, though we use asphalt emulsion more often than nail polish. I understand that the borers that we are trying to protect against don't live in the UK.
