Thank you Seaburngirl, I have some white Campanula which are low growing and I do find they seed themselves, but this is the first time I have grown the C.P variety and they are at least 36'' tall, so I will try to grow them from seed for next year. All the best...

Thank you Moon growe, I only have one and that is in a pot, but I intend to put it at back of a border so do you think I should do that now or would spring be better? ...

If it were mine I'd get it into the ground now, all plants survive better over winter in the ground rather than in pots.

Thanks for the tip Moon growe, I will get my resident gardener on to it tomorrow. Had intended to start on putting garden to bed then, although I am a bit reluctant as there is still quite a lot of colour and my lawn is looking so much better than it has all year, so it seems a shame. However if it is left and then the weather turns that brings it's own problems, don't you agree? All the best. Breda...

I Think you have at least a month before you need to 'put your garden to bed' living where you do - not something we do at all.

Yes, I agree, but we have had such hard winters I thought it might be a good idea to start early this year, so we made a start today, but there is still a lot to do as I just could not bring myself to disturb some of the borders as they are still looking quite good with lots of colour. However the Hostas were beginning to look very messy as were some of the geraniums, so they are done. How do you manage without the end of summer tidy-up? Wish I could...

We primarily grow alpine and woodland plants so there is no need to cut down spent flowering spikes and the like. I do, usually, go round and remove the seed heads from campanulas and saxifrages and sempervivums. Plants like meconopsis I leave the stalks and pods to rot down over winter.

Sounds like very sensible gardening, not too labour intensive, but your garden seems really well cared for. Looks so tranquil. I do leave quite a few perrenials alone as I think the old growth helps protect the roots from frost over winter. All the best...

The garden 'looks' tranquil but himself is out there weeding very often - just for an hour or two almost every day!
