Where in the garden should I place a gardenia pot to avoid frost damage? no cold frame available, but can be covered by fleece. I have a 3 foot deep pit or a higher small walled area as well as more open land.

This answer is not specific to Gardenia, but I find that keeping pots off the ground, with pot feet or a bit of polystyrene packing helps in the frost. Bubble wrap, too, as Bamboo suggests.

Thanks to both of you. What a wondeful service. I shall find a south facing spot and wrap up well with fleece. It is a Kleims hardy.
Well guessed.

Not guessed - I know, lol! There is no other hardy Gardenia available in this country than Kleims Hardy.

If your Gardenia is Kleims Hardy, then work out where a sheltered, south facing spot would be, bubblewrap the pot.
If your Gardenia is any other variety, it's a houseplant here and needs to be inside.
