Hello. My daughter planted a small red robin tree in her garden last year. it has been coming on nicely but unfortunately she is moving and is not able to take it with her. My husband has dug it up today and brought it home where we have put it in a large pot with soil and compost and watered it. It isnt looking too good at the moment and wondered if you could suggest anything??

The plants proper name is a Photinia.
It's a large evergreen shrub and it should be fine.

As long as you take the entire rootball and don't break any roots it will transplant into it's new hole just fine - alternatively a pot but it will need to be a pretty large one so that the roots don't get squashed.

Keep it in the pot until it can be transplanted and then when you do, dig a hole that's twice the size of the rootball, fill with composted manure and the plant will be as good as new.

keep watering.

I'd prune it back so that the top growth (stems and leaves are the size of the root ball your husband was able to dig up, or smaller. Then just give it time - it's not an ideal time to move shrubs, but if you had to do it now, that's how it is. I hope it recovers. Keep watering it thoroughly every few days if it doesn't get a decent amount of rain, for the next year or so.

Keep watered, as the others say. Its not clear whether your plant is Photinia Little Red Robin, or Photinia Red Robin - the first only reaches 3 feet, the latter more than 12, so deciding which one it is would be a good idea before planting out, if that's what you want to do with it eventually.

Many plants look very sad for a while after being moved. I agree with the earlier advice. A bit of a trim and then dont let the pot dry out.

Next year if all is well then you can decide if you want to keep it in its pot if it is a big one, or move it to a bigger pot or move it to the garden.
