Can anyone tell me what this is and how to get rid of it, please? I think it's a kind of moss and it is overrunning the garden; it's all over the path and patio and fast creeping into gardens and lawns. What is it and how do I kill it. Systemic weed (e.g. glyphogan and Roundup) killer does ot kill it?

liverwort or Marchantia polymorpha. Glyphosate will kill it but add a couple of drops of washing up liquid to the water, as this helps break through the waxy coating on the plant.

or wash it with a stronger solution of washing up liquid and water first then rinse it let it dry then aply glyphosate based weedkiller.

A solution of Permanganate of Potash is supposed to offer the best results. It is available on the internet.

If you use permanganate do be aware that it leave nasty brown stains on hands and clothing so wear old stuff and gloves!

Thank you.
I did wonder if it was some kind of wort, with those curly leaves, but it is growing everywhere moss grows, though spreading way faster, so I wasn't at all sure what it was.

I have tried both glyphogan and washing up liquid already, with no effect on it at all, but I will make it double the strength and try again. It's a very big garden with lots of paths too, so there is masses of it to deal with.

I think it came from plants bought from a specific garden centre last year. I bought some more plants from there this year and, when I went to plant them, noticed a little of it growing in the soil in some of the pots of plants from there, so supect it was probably in last year's too, and I bought dozens from that place last year.
If it was in last year's pots, it would probably have gone unnoticed by me and got transferred to my garden. This year I did notice it in a couple of pots but probably only because it has taken over here, so I recognised it.

Forgot to say... I'll get some Permanganate of Potash too and give that a go. That is one thing I haven't tried yet.

Thank you.

Can anyone tell me the concentration of potassium permanganate to use? How much in how much water, I mean?

There are a number of items related to this on the web and the consensus of opinion is one teaspoon of crystals to two gallons of water and sprayed onto the liverwort. I have not used it myself, Cerio, but know several growers who use it on seed pans of alpines to prevent liverwort growing.

And Good luck with it. Cerio

Remember to let us know if it works!

Excellent, thank you. I'll try that. It's going to take an awful lot of potassium permanganate to deal with it all. I'll buy 500g to test it out.

In some areas, I'll try some strong solution of washing up liquid followed by stronger than usual glyphogan (as the standard dilution didn't work), in others I'll try the potassium permanganate. I just need it to stop raining long enough for anything to stay put long enough to have a chance to take effect, a minimum of 6 hours for the weed killer. Being in Scotland, the gaps in the rain are sparse.

It may take a wee while before I can judge results but I'll come back and let you know.

Thanks folks.
