Keep watering Rowans have suffered the most here in the NW...A few look like yours, they have dropped their berries as well as leaf. The one that looks healthiest is in a very shaded spot at its roots.

thanx pimpernel, i checked to see how it was beneath the bark and all good there, its in an open sunny spot but i do water alot but guess the bad summer didnt help, its got a few berries left but have fallen like you say, cheers.

I wouldnt give up on it Sanbaz, my 12-14 year old Rowan suddenly suffered from drought last summer and in July it lost all its leaves, I gave it a good soaking over 16 hours and it recovered. I read that Rowan tree roots can grow in a circle if planted in too much compost and this means in drought they can not take up the water efficiently.

It's good news that it's alive under the bark. I think it will need less water now as it's got no leaves to lose water through, so there's no point in going mad with the hose at this point. You'll need to keep an eye on it as it comes into leaf next spring, and during the summer. With a bit of luck it will get established and not need so much TLC after that.

Fingers crossed Sanbaz, next spring it will need a mulch and a good feed.

The more exposed Rowan is to the wind, the less leaves they have at the moment, think the dry spring really affected a lot of trees this year. I do think your will come back in spring, have a look for healthy buds. I have been growing some from seed, about 3 year old whips now and the exposed one have lost their leaves totally, the sheltered ones have red leaves, about to fall off.

It may be too late for it - I love that word "spingly", but I'm worried that it has no leaves at all on it now.
I think the answer was "water, water, water, water, water....etc..."
Whether it's a goner by now is hard to tell. Have you tried a little scratch test to see if it's alive? Try scraping just a little bark off at various points. If it's green underneath that bit's alive; if brown, it's dead. Start near the end of a branch and test it here and there til you get to a live bit.
Whatever the result, I'd wait til late spring before giving up on it, but I wouldn't feed or prune, just water it.
