Photinia Red Robin Leaf Dropping

I have two of these shrubs which have been in the separate parts of my garden for at least 5 years. Both suffer from heavy leaf dropping of both new and existing leaves. At present both have a flush of new shoots but the ground is covered with spent leaves. Have you any ideas?

This year I have had problems with my photinia hedge that has never occured before. The leaves have red spot but not leaf drop. I have been advised that it may have been caused by all the rain we had this winter because photinia does not like its roots waterlogged and that may be the problem. So you could try forking deeply around your plants or improving the drainage of the ground. Not certain that is the cause, but its possible.
