Bit of an odd question this... this tunnel has appeared in our lawn, the opening measures 5 x 3 cm and its pretty cleanly dug. Any ideas what made it?

Hi Howee, It could be a fox digging for worms, or a squirrell searching for buried treasure!

Or even a rat... you need to look after dark really...

My first thought would be a rat, too, Howie, we've had them in our compost heap: it's the absence of spoil around the hole that surprises me, though: it isn't possible someone has just stuck a pole in your lawn, is it?

I'd say a mouse hole, have lots in my woodland just like this.

I would have though a vole, myself. At least, that's the sort of hole they make in northern Arizona.

Thaks everyone. Yes ' i'm sure no one has stuck a pole in it. It seems small for a rat but i have seen small mice or voles (theyre very quick!) in the garden, i didnt think they dug tunnels though.

gattina hasa very valid point wear is the soil the animal dug . have you ever tried digging a hole without any soil left over . im very suspicies of this being an animal myself .

thats what i thought, but i cant see what else it would be - its definitely not human made

IT COULD BE A MOLE THATS PUSHED THE SOIL ALONG THE TUNNEL TO SOMEWEAR ELSE BUT I EVEN DOUGHT THAT OR IT JUST CAME UP FOR A LOOK FROM UNDERGROAND AS ITS ABOUT THE RIGHT SIZE . IF YOU THINK THE WHOLES TO SMALL WE HAD A CAT FLAP THAT A GERMAN SHEPHERD FITTED THREW .
